6 Questions first-time parents ask about Baby Sleep

Mar 05,2024 | o3babycollection

The number of hours of sleep required by babies is completely different from that of adults. Newborns can sleep up to 17 hours a day, and it would gradually decrease starting from the fourth month. Each sleep cycle lasts about 45 minutes, with the first 15 minutes being the "non-rapid eye movement period" for physical growth and the last 30 minutes being the "rapid eye movement period" for brain development.

In addition, some parents rush to feed their baby when he cries during sleep, but late night feeding can be a huge burden on the baby's digestive tract, making it more difficult for them to fall asleep. Parents can try to increase the amount of milk they feed before bedtime to prevent their baby from waking up during the night.

When a baby is ready to sleep, the room should be as quiet as possible and the light should be dimmed to avoid disturbing the baby's sleep.

But there is no need to make the environment completely quiet, as this will make the baby more sensitive to sound. The absence of natural background sounds will also make the baby feel uncomfortable and fearful.

Sound is not always a bad thing in baby sleep, just like when the mother talks softly to the baby, the baby is more likely to fall asleep because of the reassurance.

Babies are not yet able to distinguish the day and night. If your baby sleeps too much during the daytime, he or she will easily lose sleep at night. It is recommended that naptime after the age of half a year does not exceed 5:00 p.m. to avoid getting too much sleep in daytime.

In addition, adults need to help babies develop a sleep habit. Set up a regular bedtime schedule, such as bathing  changing into pajamas feeding mouth cleaning listening to music, etc., and try to keep the order consistent from day to day so that your baby can develop a bedtime habit. Your baby will develop sleep habit over time and adjust his or her sleeping routine.

Baby moves while sleeping is normal. If parents always too hurry to soothe your baby, it will only wake the baby up. Also, it will make the baby overly dependent on parents to put them to sleep and lose the ability to fall asleep on their own.
